Norwich City inches towards promotion playoff spot with Josh Sargent goal

Josh Sargent scores as Norwich City draws closer to promotion playoff spot

Norwich City did not secure a spot in the EFL Championship promotion playoffs but moved closer to doing so on Saturday.

The Canaries drew 2-2 with Swansea City at Carrow Road, climbing to fifth place ahead of the final day of the regular season on May 4. Josh Sargent scored his 16th league goal of the season for David Wagner’s side, putting Norwich City in a strong position to secure a top-six finish.

Despite the draw, celebrations were put on hold for Norwich City after Hull City’s 3-3 draw with Ipswich Town on Saturday night.

In a hard-fought match on home turf, Norwich City had to come from behind to earn a point after Jamie Paterson opened the scoring for Swansea City in the 24th minute. Gabriel Sara equalized for the Canaries in the 34th minute before Sargent’s headed goal in first-half stoppage time gave Norwich City a 2-1 lead.

Sargent’s goal was his 13th of the 2024 season.

However, Matt Grimes’ penalty-kick equalizer in the second half helped Swansea City salvage a 2-2 draw.

Sargent had three shots on target out of eight in total, while also winning four duels and drawing two fouls. He has been a consistent threat in the final third for Norwich City this spring.

Norwich City will secure a top-six finish with a win or draw against Birmingham City on May 4. A loss on the road, coupled with a Hull City victory over Plymouth Argyle, could see the Canaries miss out on a playoff spot altogether.
