‘Not Perfect’ Shelton Confesses Desire To ‘Destroy Whoever Is On The Other Side Of The Net’

Ben Shelton had a really successful debut campaign on the ATP Tour in 2023, and he hopes to add more accolades in 2024.

When Ben Shelton finished 2022 on a high note by winning a couple of ATP Challenger events nobody expected him to almost finish in the Top 10 at the end of the next year. Yet, that’s exactly what happened as the American amazed pretty early on in the season with a tremendous run in Australia.

Over the course of the following few months, Shelton kept grinding and learning on the job. That experience allowed him to have a really strong finish to the season with the US Open run and the Tokyo title run. He was in contention for the ATP Finals, which shows just how strong of a year he had.

In an interview with On Running, his kit sponsor, Shelton, reflected on the year he had, admitting that he’s far from perfect, but he keeps working towards that elusive goal.

I know I am not perfect. I have flaws and a lot to improve, but that’s what keeps me working. I can’t do great things in this things in this game if I don’t work as hard, or harder than everyone out there. I am a competitor. I want to win every match. I want to destroy whoever is on the other side of the net.

This upcoming season matters for Shelton in many ways. The most important part is actually backing up the results, not what everybody is aware of what he can do. It will be tough, and he might not do it. Many young players struggle after their initial success.

His hard-working nature will certainly help him in that regard but time will tell best. The Australian Open is coming up soon so let’s see if he can deliver again.
