Novak Djokovic has been utterly dominant this year, which shouldn’t be happening, according to Boris Becker, who used to coach the 24-time Grand Slam champion years ago.
The legendary German player knows a thing or two about tennis, and he’s certainly always been familiar with Novak Djokovic’s skill set. He used to coach the Serbian with great success in the past so he’s grown to appreciate him even more.
The Serbian improved a lot since Becker last coached, and it’s what’s so amazing about this whole thing. He won three out of four Grand Slams in 2023, and that shouldn’t be happening at his age, according to Becker.
He spoke about Djokovic’s continued dominance in the ‘Das Gelbe vom Ball’ podcast, discussing his dominance so late in his career.
You’re not really meant to play tennis like that at the age of 36. The way Djokovic performed at the majors this year makes it very hard to imagine him falling off next year. Some players are improving every week, and there are those who have already bested him in a Grand Slam final, but even so, it seems logical to assume that Djokovic will be fine in 2024.
Becker certainly anticipates him to remain at the very least competent and competitive while the younger generation slowly narrows the gap.
He will be 37 years old next May, whereas Alcaraz and co. will be better and more experienced. I think the best thing that can happen for the tennis scene as a whole is for Djokovic to remain strong and for the younger generation to come closer.
