NYCFC Embraces 'Bulletproof' Mindset Ahead of Showdown with Messin

NYCFC Prepares for Eastern Conference Final Against Messi’s Inter Miami

New York City FC’s head coach, Pascal Jansen, emphasized a ‘bulletproof’ mentality as his team gears up for a crucial match against Inter Miami in the Eastern Conference final, scheduled for Saturday night at Chase Stadium. The focus, according to Jansen, will be on maintaining composure in the face of the star power that Messi brings to the game.

Since taking over in 2025, Jansen has steered NYCFC to within a single game of clinching a second MLS Cup title. He noted the importance of the team’s mental approach when facing formidable opponents.

“From the very beginning, I stressed the need for a bulletproof mindset to my players and staff,” Jansen explained in an interview. “It’s crucial to stay focused on executing our responsibilities, regardless of the circumstances.” He also acknowledged Messi’s significant impact, stating, “While Messi’s presence is undeniably strong, it’s vital for our players not to get overwhelmed by it and to stick to their game plan.”

This season has proven challenging for NYCFC when facing Inter Miami; they have yet to secure a victory, having drawn 2-2 in their first encounter and lost 4-0 in a subsequent match at Citi Field. Despite this, Jansen believes that his squad has evolved and will present a more robust challenge this time around.

“We recognize that it will be a tough contest,” he said. “Our previous games against Miami have taught us a lot about how to manage our performance in high-pressure situations, particularly against a team like theirs that boasts a player of Messi’s caliber.”

NYCFC entered the playoffs as the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, managing to defeat Charlotte FC in the opening round and then overcoming the Philadelphia Union in the semifinals to reach the final. In contrast, Inter Miami has advanced smoothly through the playoffs, having won their previous two matches by an impressive 4-0 scoreline against Nashville SC and FC Cincinnati. With a lineup that includes MLS legends like Messi, Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, Miami is certainly favored heading into Saturday’s clash.

When asked if he feels any pressure being seen as the underdog, Jansen maintained his focus on his team’s fortitude. “I don’t mind being viewed as the underdog,” Jansen stated. “What outside opinions label us doesn’t concern me. Our emphasis is on our approach and preparation.”

The victor of this matchup will advance to compete in the MLS Cup on December 6 against either San Diego FC or the Vancouver Whitecaps.
