Nestled beside serene Lake Oberon is the Oberon Golf Club.
Sitting in the picturesque Central Tablelands region two and a half hours west of Sydney, Oberon Golf Club is a real hidden gem.
At an altitude of over 1000m, it really is “golf elevated” as they say in Oberon with mild temperatures in summer and the odd flurry of snow in winter.
Be prepared for stunning views, rolling lush green fairways and tiny sloping greens, with Oberon a challenging walk with big elevation changes and barely a flat lie to be found.
The fourth hole at Oberon Golf Club, a hidden gem in the NSW Central Tablelands.
The view from the second tee offers the first look at Lake Oberon and before the hole drops over 60m down to the fairway, then down some more to the green.
The fourth and fifth holes border Lake Oberon for nearly a kilometre, making it the longest continuous water hazard in the country.
The lake sneaks in closer and closer on the left on approach to the green on the fourth and then very close again on the left of the landing area on the fifth. If a hook occasionally sneaks into your game, best to leave that at home.
Towering gums reach out into the fairways on most holes providing stunning beauty but also some very narrow gaps to thread the ball through. Balancing these challenges is the extra distance, (almost 10%) the thinner air at altitude provides and the complete absence of bunkers.
Very comfortable accommodation can be easily found in and around Oberon and with a superb Thai restaurant in the clubhouse, great food is readily available along with exceptional local cool climate wines and local award-winning craft beer.
‘Golf elevated’, Oberon is worth a visit for golfers looking for an alternative and unique experience.
