Former WTA player Laura Robson laughed off claims that Jannik Sinner is not great on grass because history tells otherwise.
The Italian player is the top seed for this year’s Wimbledon, but some people say he’s not really great on grass and that it’s not his favorite surface. The grass might not be his favorite surface, but calling him ‘not good’ on grass is a bit too much.
He just won his first trophy as a number one at the Halle Open, an ATP 500 event played on grass. He made the Wimbledon semi-finals last year, something former player Robson pointed at when Sky Sports asked about those claims.
“I always find it funny that people are like ‘Sinner’s not great on grass’ and he’s not having it as his favourite surface. He made the semis last year, but I think the confidence he has in his game, the mental belief is such a difference this year.”
There is something different about Sinner this year, and he showed it early at the Australian Open. The way he stepped out against Novak Djokovic and bested him in four sets was clear evidence that he’s really ‘arrived this year.’
That confidence persists even six months into the season, and that’s a huge boost for his chances. After the most recent report of Sinner beating Djokovic in a practice set, his grass-court qualities were even further proven.
“Every match, he seems to be going in as favourite and he just seems so humble about it and at peace with it, the way he goes about his business. He got here pretty early last week to start practicing and he looks pretty good.”
“He hits the ball probably, the cleanest of anybody on tour and it’s such a nice strike. He’s No. 1 seed for a reason.”
