Opelka Withdraws From 2024 Brisbane International And Further Postpones Comeback

Opelka Withdraws From 2024 Brisbane International And Further Postpones Comeback

Reilly Opelka has not played in a very long time, and he won’t until further as he withdrew from the 2024 Brisbane International.

Just a few days before the ATP 250 tournament in Brisbane was supposed to kick off, big-serving Reilly Opelka withdrew from the event. The American hasn’t played on the ATP Tour in over a year, as he last played in August of 2022.

His last tennis match, though, was in November of this year as he made a brief return on the challenger Tour. He played one match, won it, and withdrew before the next one.

An injury setback was the likely culprit, though Opelka didn’t really update the fans about what was going on. The hope remained that he would be ready for the start of the 2024 season, but that doesn’t seem likely after this most recent setback.

While initially on the entry list for the 2024 Brisbane International, which begins on January 1st, Opelka has now officially withdrawn from the event just a few days before he would have played his first ATP match in a very long time.

We don’t know exactly what is going on except the obvious, which is that he’s not ready to play. It’s heartbreaking for the American who was playing really strong tennis when he got injured.

He could have possibly made a run to the Top 10, but now it’s going to be really tough as he first has to make sure he’s healthy enough to play.

He’s still on the entry list for the Australian Open, so fans are hoping that he’ll be ready by the time that comes around, but we’ll see.

The trip to Australia is long, so he certainly won’t bother going if he doesn’t feel totally ready to compete the way he wants. As always, time will tell.
