Panthers Are Reportedly Interested In Free-Agent CB

The Carolina Panthers were a disaster last season and are now looking to pick up the pieces and turn things around on both ends of the ball.

No. 1 pick Bryce Young’s struggles in his first year at quarterback were well documented, but that got so much attention that it took away from how bad this team’s defense was last season, as the Panthers gave up 24.5 points per game (4th-worst in the league), and had the fewest turnovers in the NFL with just 11.

Help may be on the way in the form of a familiar face, as The Athletic’s Joseph Person has shared that the team has reached out to former Panther cornerback Stephon Gilmore about a possible return, via Dov Kleiman.

Gilmore is a free agent once again after playing for four teams over the past four years, most recently spending 2023 with the Dallas Cowboys where he played all 17 games and made a career-high 68 tackles to go along with a pair of interceptions.

The 2019 Defensive Player of the Year played just eight games in an injury-plagued season for the Panthers in 2021, where he had two picks and just 16 tackles in his first year after leaving the New England Patriots via trade.

Gilmore is 33 and would provide some needed veteran leadership for a defense severely lacking in that department, especially after trading star edge rusher Brian Burns to the New York Giants.

Troy Hill had one interception for the Panthers last season, and no other corner on the roster had one, which just stresses how badly this squad needs help in the secondary.

Gilmore would be a welcome addition even though he is getting up there in age.
