Angelique Kerber is returning to tennis in January, and Boris Becker is excited to see whether Kerber can do some damage.
Angelique Kerber was a fantastic tennis player at her peak. She was the last German number one on the WTA Tour, which Becker mentioned in his talk with Eurosport.
The former legendary player is excited to see what damage she can do after her return. The absence was due to a pregnancy, of course, a pregnancy that went well.
Soon after giving birth, Kerber returned to practice, wanting to prove herself again. While not the youngest anymore, she’s certain that she has what it takes to emulate some of the things other mothers like Elina Svitolina and compatriot Tatjana Maria were able to do.
Boris Becker is excited to see it, but he understands that it won’t be easy. It will take some time to get into the swing of things fully, but once she finds her tennis, it should be good. We’ve seen it happen recently with Carloline Wozniacki as well.
“It’s incredibly great news that the last German number one, the last German Wimbledon winner, is coming back. Does she have the patience, does she have the endurance? Does she have the nerve to accept one or two defeats at the beginning in order to then have match practice with a view to the grass season?”
Her schedule is already packed with a few events, though the main event will obviously be the Australian Open. When she does return, it will be well over a year since she last played, but fans will be glad to have the former champion back.
It will be a great reunion in Melbourne with Kerber back, Wozniacki, who she can take inspiration from, according to Becker, playing again, and Naomi Osaka coming back as well.
“She is the mother of two children and played a fantastic US Open. So it’s possible.”
