There is no question about who is in charge of the Denver Broncos in 2024.

Heading into his second season in the Mile High City, head coach Sean Payton cleaned house of players he did not want going forward and is busy putting his imprint on the team.

Never one to back away from a challenging situation, Peyton is earning the respect of his players as they prepare to fight in the rugged AFC West.

Star cornerback Patrick Surtain heaped high praise onto Payton, telling Jim Rome that “he’s never backing down to anything…He’s accepting every challenge.”

The Alabama product should know how to rate a head coach, having played college football for the legendary Nick Saban.

With only three NFL seasons under his belt, Surtain has already been selected to a pair of Pro Bowls and is widely considered Denver’s best player.

As for Payton, if he brings a championship to the Broncos faithful as he did in New Orleans, he will own the city and state.

But first, he must find a solution for the team’s quarterback issue, as the position is wide open with the departure of veteran Russell Wilson.

Bo Nix was an interesting first-round quarterback selection out of Oregon, and he certainly brings a wealth of college experience to the Broncos.

If or when that translates to NFL success is another story.

But, at least for Surtain, Peyton’s job of winning over the team’s leaders is progressing nicely.

Now, he just needs to win some big games.
