Patrik Laine is poised to be put on the trade block this summer. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun has reported on Insider Trading that the Columbus Blue Jackets are looking to part ways with the Finnish winger and former second-overall pick. LeBrun stated:
“He (Laine) would like to move on. His agent had conversations with the Blue Jackets about it. Both sides are going to work together to try to get that done. He wants a fresh start, hasn’t been a good time in Columbus.”
The Blue Jackets acquired Laine from the Winnipeg Jets in the 2020-2021 season in a significant trade. Laine signed a four-year extension with Columbus in July 2022, but it now seems unlikely he will fulfill that contract.
Laine’s time in Columbus has been marred by injuries, with him playing in less than 60 games in each of the last four seasons. This year, he appeared in just 18 games, scoring six goals and nine points, and is currently in the NHL Players Assistance Program.
Laine’s Situation Screams Change Of Scenery
Laine has not lived up to his potential since his time in Winnipeg, where he was a prolific young goal scorer. The concept of Laine playing alongside players like Johnny Gaudreau was enticing for Blue Jackets fans, but unfortunately, it did not materialize as expected.
Despite his struggles in Winnipeg and Columbus, there are expected to be teams interested in acquiring Laine. LeBrun mentioned that the market size remains uncertain due to Laine having two seasons left on his contract with an $8.7 million cap hit, but the idea of obtaining a 40-goal scorer at a lower price could attract some teams.
*Please note a correction: Laine has two seasons remaining on his current contract, not four.
