Patriots Turned Down Multiple Trade Offers from Giants and Vikings Before Drafting Drake Maye

Before Selecting Drake Maye, Patriots Rejected Multiple Trade Offers From Giants and Vikings

The 2024 NFL Draft Recap

The 2024 NFL Draft took place, showcasing new talent being added to teams across the league. Notably, the New England Patriots made a significant move by selecting quarterback Drake Maye in the first round.

Reports surfaced that the Patriots turned down lucrative trade offers to secure Maye in the draft.

Patriots Reject Trade Offers for Drake Maye

Entering the draft, the Patriots held the third overall pick, a prime position to acquire a quarterback. While they missed out on top prospect Caleb Williams, they had the opportunity to choose from a talented group that included Maye, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy, and Bo Nix.

Ultimately, the Patriots selected Maye, despite receiving enticing offers from teams like the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings.

The Giants proposed a trade involving their 6th pick and a future first-round pick, while the Vikings offered multiple picks in exchange for the Patriots’ third overall selection.

However, New England stood firm and chose Maye as their future franchise quarterback.

Assessing Maye’s Potential

Many analysts regarded Maye as the top quarterback prospect in the draft, emphasizing his size, athleticism, and arm talent. Ian Cummings of Pro Football Network particularly praised Maye’s abilities and ranked him highly alongside other top prospects.

Maye’s strengths include throwing outside the numbers and his problem-solving skills, while he still has areas to improve on like footwork and decision-making under pressure.

Patriots’ Quarterback Depth Chart

Following the draft, the Patriots boast a deep quarterback roster, headlined by Maye as their recent high draft pick. Additionally, they acquired Joe Milton III in the later rounds and signed veteran Jacoby Brissett to mentor the young quarterbacks.

Brissett, a seasoned veteran, brings experience and leadership to the team. The Patriots also have Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke from the previous season, providing depth and competition at the quarterback position.
