In a thrilling encounter at the Delray Beach Open, Tommy Paul emerged victorious over fellow American Taylor Fritz, avenging a previous defeat from two years ago. The fifth-seeded Paul delivered a strong performance, defeating the top seed, Fritz, with a score of 6-4, 6-3 in a rapid 76 minutes. This victory dashed Fritz’s aspirations of claiming his third title at this tournament.
Reflecting on the match, Paul expressed his joy at competing close to home against one of his closest friends. “I heard a lot of American tennis chants today, and I promise we love that stuff. We’re trying really hard for you guys,” he commented during his post-match interview. He noted his movement and serving as significant factors in his win, especially on crucial points. “Usually if you hold serve, you’ll be in the match, and I found the way on some big break points. I was really happy with how I played today,” he added.
Next up for Paul is a clash with Learner Tien, a rising talent on the ATP circuit and the current Next Gen champion. Tien showcased his skills by overcoming Frances Tiafoe, the 2018 Delray Beach champion, with a final score of 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5 after battling back from a break down in the deciding set. Paul acknowledged Tien’s impressive form over the past year, stating, “He’s obviously really turned it on. He’s undoubtedly one of the best players in the world now.”
Meanwhile, Sebastian Korda continued his strong showing at the tournament, pulling off a significant upset against second-seeded Casper Ruud, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a contest that lasted two hours and six minutes. Korda appeared to find his rhythm after a slow start that saw him struggle with 17 unforced errors in the opening set. “I tried battling as much as I could. Luckily, I found some form and started playing really well after that first set,” he explained.
Korda’s resilience paid off as he gained a crucial break at 3-2 in the second set and solidified his momentum with another break later on. With this victory, he advances to the semi-finals for the first time since 2021, where he will encounter Flavio Cobolli, the third seed, who advanced by defeating Coleman Wong 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-2 after two hours and 14 minutes of play.
The Delray Beach Open continues to showcase riveting tennis as players vie for a prestigious title, with Paul and Korda both demonstrating the depth of talent in American tennis.
