BBC Sport analyst Paul Robinson has chosen Giorgi Mamardashvili, the goalkeeper for Liverpool, as his Man of the Match following their 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals.
During a challenging match at Parc des Princes, Liverpool’s head coach Arne Slot witnessed his team’s defensive plans being severely tested. However, Mamardashvili emerged as a crucial barrier, preventing a potentially worse outcome after a recent 4-0 loss to Manchester City.
Robinson Praises Mamardashvili’s Performance
In comments made on BBC Radio 5 Live, Robinson asserted that the goalkeeper’s efforts provided Liverpool with some hope as they prepare for the second leg at Anfield next Tuesday.
Robinson remarked: “Liverpool were caught out defensively on too many occasions. Giorgi Mamardashvili was my standout player tonight. Based on today’s performance, Liverpool has a lot of work ahead against a very strong PSG team.”
Mamardashvili’s Statistics Against PSG
Filling in for the injured Alisson Becker, Mamardashvili faced an unyielding assault from the visiting European champions.
While the Liverpool offense did not manage a single shot on target, the matchup saw PSG unleash 18 attempts on goal.
Stats Overview:
- Saves: 4
- Saves from Inside the Box: 4
- Recoveries: 4
- Touches: 33
- Passing Accuracy: 58%
The highlight of Mamardashvili’s performance came late in the first half when he executed a stunning block against Doue in a one-on-one situation, followed by an impressive save from a curling shot by his compatriot, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
While Kvaratskhelia eventually scored again in the 65th minute by rounding the goalkeeper, Mamardashvili’s determination helped maintain the two-goal difference with crucial saves, including one from Ousmane Dembélé in the closing minutes.
For Liverpool to achieve a comeback at Anfield in the upcoming match, Mamardashvili will need to replicate his outstanding performance once more.
