Paul Scholes has criticized Erik ten Hag’s tactics, particularly his use of midfield starlet Kobbie Mainoo.
Manchester United suffered a heavy defeat against Crystal Palace on Monday night, losing 4-0 at Selhurst Park.
Ten Hag’s team failed to put up a fight and struggled to cope with Palace’s attacking threats.
Due to an injury to Bruno Fernandes, a new midfield trio of Mason Mount, Christian Eriksen, and Kobbie Mainoo was tested. However, the lack of defensive cover was evident, with a makeshift defense line of an out-of-position Casemiro and an unfit Jonny Evans being exposed.
Mainoo has been a bright spot this season, despite a recent dip in form. His impressive rise was highlighted by a stunning goal against Liverpool last month.
However, Mainoo has been overworked, playing 28 senior games this season after recovering from a long-term injury. Scholes criticized Ten Hag’s handling of the young talent after United’s loss to Crystal Palace.
“We saw Mainoo playing out of position, almost like a left-back at times. The gaps in midfield were too big and he left Eriksen isolated. This has been a recurring issue this season, and it’s why they are conceding so many goals.”
Mainoo is still developing and expected to make mistakes. He has room to improve defensively, but with a team lacking tactical direction and support, his form has suffered.
