Jessica Pegula is back in Australia for the United Cup, which she won last year with Team USA, so she’s excited to try and do it again, but also sad not to have her old teammates.
Last year’s United Cup saw Team USA dominate their way to the trophy after putting together a really strong team. American tennis has been thriving in the past few years, so they put together another solid team this year in hopes of winning this competition again.
Jessica Pegula is once again part of that team, and she’s excited to be back in Australia, especially in Perth, where she never was before. That’s exciting, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag for Pegula, who is kind of sad that the full team from last year is not back.
Yeah, it’s exciting to be here. I’ve never been here before. So it’s not many times you get to see a new city on tour so that’s exciting. Kind of sad though because we’re missing half our team. I feel like it’s not the same. Like Taylor said, it’s a different format this year. To be honest, it’s kind of sad. I don’t know.
Even so, she’s excited about the competition itself because playing for the United States is something she loves to do. You don’t really get too many chances to do so in tennis, so anytime you can play for your country, it is a good day in her book.
The goal is the same as last year. Despite a different format and different team, the goal is to win.
I’m excited though. We’re ready to get going. But I do feel a little, yeah, kind of depressed half the team isn’t here. We had such a fun year last year. But yeah, different format, totally different this year, and hopefully we can still get it done.
Their first tie will be played on December 31st, 2023 against the United Kingdom.
