The New Orleans Pelicans and fourth-year guard Trey Murphy III have reached a deal on a four-year, $112 million rookie contract extension with the team, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Monday.

The contract does not include any incentives or player options. According to Spotrac, Murphy is going into the last year of his current four-year, $14.78 million rookie contract.

In the previous season, Murphy posted career highs with averages of 14.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 44.3% from the field, 38% from beyond the arc, and 81.5% from the free throw line in 57 games, 23 of which he started.

In addition, he achieved career bests in player efficiency rating (16.3) and usage percentage (18.6%). Murphy led the league in turnover percentage (4.7%) and ranked 19th in offensive rating (126.6) during the season.

Standing at 6-foot-8, Murphy has solidified his presence as a 3-and-D wing. He set career highs with 3.0 made threes and 7.8 three-point attempts per game in the last season.

In March, Murphy put up 28 points off the bench to contribute to the Pelicans’ victory over the Atlanta Hawks in a three-game road trip. He also posted a season-high 31 points against the Portland Trail Blazers on April 9.

During the 2024 Western Conference playoffs, Murphy notched a playoff career-best 21 points in Game 1 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Per ESPN Information & Research, Murphy and teammate CJ McCollum are the only players in Pelicans history to make over 150 threes in multiple seasons.

Opponents shot only 42.2% from the field when Murphy was guarding them last season, ranking him fifth among 201 defenders who were closest on at least 500 shots, based on Second Spectrum data.

Recently, it was announced that Murphy will miss the beginning of the regular season due to a right hamstring strain. The Pelicans will face the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.
