The manager of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, has expressed the need for enhanced tolerance and understanding following an incident where some Leeds United fans booed a pause in the game to facilitate Muslim players breaking their Ramadan fast.
The event took place during Manchester City’s hard-fought 1-0 win at Elland Road, when the match was briefly halted in the 13th minute to support players observing Ramadan.

As the sun set around 5:42 PM, the referee paused the game for 78 seconds, allowing City players Rayan Aït-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, and Omar Marmoush to hydrate and refuel. Despite the clear message displayed on the big screen regarding the pause, jeers from the home fans were audible.
Guardiola conveyed his frustration to reporters post-match, saying, “It is a modern world, right? Respect religion, respect diversity, that is the issue. The Premier League has indicated players can take one or two minutes for this. Unfortunately, what is the problem?”
He emphasized that the break was crucial for the welfare of his players, noting that Cherki and Aït-Nouri had not consumed any food throughout the day and required nourishment and hydration to maintain their performance levels.

The anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out condemned the crowd’s reaction, calling it “massively disappointing.” They pointed out that the match interruption for Muslim players to break their fast has been an accepted practice for several years, highlighting that such actions help make football more inclusive for Muslim athletes and communities.
“It’s disappointing that some Leeds United fans booed when Manchester City’s players broke their fast during the first half of the match at Elland Road. This was worsened by the fact that the reason for the pause was displayed on a big screen within the stadium. Tonight’s reaction shows that football still has much to learn regarding acceptance and education.”
