Persuading Jurgen Klopp to Lead the US Men’s National Team

After USA’s early exit from Copa America, former Everton legend Tim Howard believes he can persuade retired coach Jurgen Klopp to take charge of the national team.

Gregg Berhalter’s Troubles

The United States is gearing up to co-host the 2026 World Cup, a crucial event for soccer’s growth in the country. Gregg Berhalter took over as the national team coach in 2018 and led them to the Round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, his coaching tenure was marred by allegations of assault against a woman in 2023.

An investigative report released on March 13 found that while Berhalter’s actions likely constituted assault, he did not withhold information when hired. Despite this, the organization reinstated him and offered him a contract to manage the team for the upcoming World Cup.

Following a disappointing Copa America campaign, with a third-place finish in the group stage, calls for Berhalter’s dismissal have grown louder.

Howard’s Proposal

Tim Howard, former USMNT goalkeeper, is advocating for Klopp to replace Berhalter as the national team coach. Klopp recently retired after a successful managerial career, and Howard is confident he can persuade him to take on the challenge of coaching the USA.

Howard stated, “I know Klopp has only been retired a few weeks and I know he wants a break. But if we sat around his villa in Spain, I think I could lure him over here. The money is certainly there, and he has a young group of players who can play progressive soccer.”

While Klopp is known for his affinity for underdog teams, it remains to be seen if he will consider the offer at this point in his retirement.

Potential USA Coach for 2026 World Cup

An alternative option for the USA coaching position could be American coach Jesse Marsch. Currently managing Canada, Marsch has already made a positive impact by leading the team to the quarter-finals of Copa America. His upcoming match against Venezuela could further showcase his coaching abilities.
