Perth: USA and Switzerland Battle Their Way into Semi-Finals

The United Cup’s quarter-final stage has concluded with both the United States and Switzerland advancing to the semi-finals. Both teams displayed resilience, relying on their mixed doubles pairings to secure their spots in the next round as they head to Sydney to battle for a place in the finals.

In an exciting day session, the USA triumphed over Greece with a score of 2-1, while Switzerland followed suit by overcoming Argentina, also by the same scoreline. The deciding matches for both teams were intense, showcasing determination and skill.

Coco Gauff and Christian Harrison sealed the deal for Team USA in their mixed doubles match. Despite trailing initially against a spirited duo of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari, who had leveled the tie with Tsitsipas’s singles win over Taylor Fritz, the American pair fought back. They clinched victory after a fierce contest, finishing at 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 on their third match point. This win marks their third consecutive victory as a pair in this tournament, and they are on track to secure their third United Cup title in four years.

Earlier in the day, Gauff delivered a robust start for her team, earning a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sakkari. However, Tsitsipas countered with a solid performance to defeat Fritz 6-4, 7-5, leveling the tie and setting the stage for the decisive mixed doubles match.

Reflecting on his performance, Tsitsipas expressed his determination to fight for his team, emphasizing the importance of delivering at a crucial moment. He noted the mental preparation he undertook, visualizing the match and executing his plan effectively, particularly with his serve during critical points.

Gauff’s solid performance throughout the tournament has been pivotal. Apart from a single setback, her record stands impressive with a 7-1 in singles and an undefeated 6-0 in doubles.

As Team USA progresses, they will face the winner of the quarter-final matchup between Poland and Australia.

In the evening session, Switzerland mirrored the USA’s success. The pairing of Belinda Bencic and Jakub Paul delivered a commanding performance in mixed doubles, defeating Argentina’s duo of Maria Lourdes Carle and Guido Andreozzi 6-3, 6-3, thereby securing their spot in Sydney.

Earlier in the day, Sebastian Baez demonstrated his form by defeating Stan Wawrinka 7-5, 6-4, which leveled the tie. Baez’s ability to fend off break points and capitalize on Wawrinka’s errors helped him maintain his undefeated start to the season.

Bencic had previously secured a straight-sets win over Solana Sierra, showcasing her strong form as she won 6-2, 6-2. Her performance included breaking Sierra’s serve multiple times, culminating in a decisive victory in just over an hour.

Both Bencic and Paul displayed exceptional teamwork in their match, achieving victory in 68 minutes and maintaining their unbeaten records throughout the tournament.

Bencic remarked on the importance of starting the season well, acknowledging the confidence it brings to carry positive momentum forward. Looking ahead, she pointed out the significance of early competitive play as they prepare for the Australian Open.

As Switzerland prepares to face either Belgium or the Czech Republic in the semi-finals, the excitement for the next stage of the tournament continues to build.
