Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes Thomas Tuchel is the perfect candidate to become the next manager of the iconic club.
Erik ten Hag’s side sit 14th in the table and have suffered two humbling 0-3 home defeats to rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, whilst only scoring five league goals in seven matches.
The under-fire Dutchman has seemingly survived an executive meeting last week between United’s big hitters including owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and looks set to be in charge versus Brentford on Saturday.
It has been reported though that if United lose their next two games against Brentford and Fenerbahce, Ten Hag will finally be axed.
The instability of the Dutchman’s job has led to much discussion on who will be next to take over the reins at the club and one name that is frequently mentioned is Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel, who is reportedly “back in contact” with United.
Certainly one former Red Devil would be delighted with the prospect of the German taking over at Old Trafford, as when speaking on YouTube podcast, Seaman Says, Peter Schmeichel strongly backed the idea of Tuchel joining his former club.
The goalkeeping great defended Tuchel’s recent managerial record by stating, “I think with Tuchel and the last two jobs that he had at Chelsea and Bayern Munich, he’s been at those two clubs at the wrong time in their history. Chelsea was a mess when he was there and there was so much internal fighting.”
He also claimed that Bayern changed their whole board of directors while he was at the club which made his task unenviable.
Pushed on what he personally sees in the German he claimed, “I really like Thomas Tuchel. Being around the Champions League and interviewing him, listening to what he’s saying when he’s in the technical area, and his personality, he just looks like somebody who could be a good manager at Manchester United.”
“I don’t think he had his way at Chelsea. I know for sure he didn’t have his way at Bayern. I just think he’s got such a great aura around him that he fits the bill.”
Nonetheless, Schmeichel did then state he would back Ten Hag while he was still in a job. “Erik ten Hag is still the manager, and for as long as he’s the manager, as a fan I will support him because I want the club to do well.”
With the return of club football only a few days away, the pressure will undoubtedly be ramped up on the former Ajax manager with the currently unemployed Tuchel’s name even more likely to fill back pages over the coming days and weeks.
