Rory McIlroy has decided against rejoining the PGA Tour Policy Board due to discomfort expressed by certain individuals.
Although he did not disclose specific names, the Northern Irishman explained that the process of rejoining the player-led group, which he departed from in November, became complex and contentious, resulting in his decision to remain on the sidelines.
Initially, there were reports that McIlroy would reverse his decision and rejoin the board to assist with negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which were initiated in June the previous year.
It was also stated that Webb Simpson would step down to make room for McIlroy, but the former four-time major champion clarified that this arrangement will not be taking place, expressing his support for Simpson to continue in his role.
“There’s been a lot of discussions. It reminded me of the reasons why I initially stepped down,” McIlroy stated at Quail Hollow. “The situation became quite convoluted and messy, reopening old wounds and past issues.”
“There was a faction on the board that seemed uneasy with my return for some reason.
“In light of this, I believe the best course of action is for Webb to remain and complete his term, especially if there are reservations about my reinstatement. He seems content with this decision, and I am supportive of him continuing in his position.”

“I offered to assist, but the process to reinstate me was complex. There are no hard feelings, and we will move forward,” McIlroy added.
“Golf and the PGA Tour have been incredibly supportive of me over the years,” he expressed when asked about his motivation to serve on the PGA Tour.
“I feel a sense of duty to give back and pave the way for the next generation of players, just as legends like Jack, Arnie, and Tiger did for us, laying the foundation for the thriving PGA Tour we have today.
“Each generation has a responsibility to leave the tour in a better place than they found it. That’s the essence of it.”

McIlroy was succeeded by Jordan Spieth as one of six player directors, alongside Simpson, Patrick Cantlay, Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, and Peter Malnati. McIlroy resigned to focus on his game and his personal life, prioritizing being a devoted husband and father.
In the same period of his resignation, McIlroy disclosed to the Irish Independent that he and Cantlay, a new board member, had differing perspectives and didn’t share many commonalities.
Their relationship faced further strain at the Ryder Cup in Rome when McIlroy was involved in a dispute with Cantlay’s caddie Joe LaCava.
Since the emergence of the LIV Golf League in 2022, McIlroy has become a prominent figure both within the boardroom and publicly as he fervently supported the PGA Tour in its standoff against the Saudi-backed LIV Golf, amid efforts to lure players to the rival circuit.
However, in line with many of his tour peers, McIlroy now emphasizes the importance of peace. Following a pivotal meeting between player directors and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of the PIF in March, substantial progress was made, instilling optimism in McIlroy regarding a potential resolution between the two entities.
“I remain hopeful,” he remarked. “Webb’s continued presence is beneficial. He offers a balanced perspective and understands the bigger picture, which is crucial.
“I was concerned about the implications if Webb had stepped down without me replacing him. I am pleased with Webb’s decision to stay and fulfill his term.”
