Pistons management has attempted to shake things up slightly amid one of the most depressing seasons in the history of professional sports.
Detroit, who currently sit dead last at 3-36, have traded former No. 2 pick Marvin Bagley III, Isaiah Livers and two future second-round draft picks to the Washington Wizards for Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscala.
The deal means the Pistons will avoid paying Bagley the $12.5 million he was owed for next season. The Wizards will now pay that money, but they will also receive two second-round picks as compensation. The other players involved in the trade are all on expiring contracts.
Detroit has long been hoping to add some veteran shooters to their team, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, and Gallinari and Muscala fit that mould.
The Bagley experiment never quite worked in Detroit. Pistons head coach Monty Williams only played him 18.4 minutes per game. In that time, he managed to put up 10.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game on 59.1% shooting.
Bagley started his career with the Sacramento Kings, who selected him second overall at the 2018 NBA Draft.
He rose to prominence as one of the best high school players in the country, before attending Duke where he averaged 21 points and 11.1 rebounds per game.
