Heading into the 2023 NFL season, the Cleveland Browns had high hopes of turning things around as they’d finally get to see the impact of having a healthy Deshaun Watson under center.

Unfortunately for the Browns, it was more of the same from Watson in 2023, as he once again only played six games for the team before being shut down for the year due to an injury.

Despite the absence of their star quarterback, Cleveland went on an impressive run that saw the resurgence of veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, resulting in an unexpected playoff berth and hopes of potentially going the distance in the postseason.

Even though the season ended with an embarrassing loss to the upstart Houston Texans in the playoffs, Cleveland proved resilient with a promising future ahead.

Unfortunately for defensive end Lonnie Phelps, that promising future for the Browns will not involve him as he was arrested for drunk driving earlier this week after crashing into a restaurant in Florida with his SUV.

Cleveland felt that it was the last straw and waived him on Thursday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Although this unfortunate series of events led to Phelps getting waived by the team, Cleveland isn’t suffering a significant loss here, as it is nothing more than a bit of bad press and a forgettable incident.

In the meantime, the Browns will prepare for training camp, which will get underway next month, with the team hoping to get the squad ready for what will likely be an interesting 2024 campaign.
