The Pittsburgh Pirates put on a rare power show Friday night at home against the New York Mets, smashing seven home runs and two grand slams in a 14-2 rout.
The astounding number was a season-high for any major league team, with the A’s coming closest with six dingers in a win over the Marlins on May 4.
As any baseball fan knows, hitting the ball out of the park at home is always followed by a round of fireworks to fire up the already excited fans and demoralize the visitors.
Well, almost always.
The Pirates may need to up their stash of explosives for future games after coming up short for celebrations against the Mets.

As impressive as the bats’ display was against New York, the power of rookie phenom pitcher Paul Skenes was perhaps even more extraordinary.
The fireballer made MLB history with his seven-inning, eight-strikeout performance.
The eight Mets fanned set the all-time baseball record for the most starts of seven or more strikeouts in the first ten appearances in MLB history.
His total reached nine.
Skenes now sports a dashing 2.12 ERA and is 5-0 on the season.
The Pirates are certainly one of baseball’s most exciting franchises, and if the club adds a few more pieces to the lineup, they could very well make noise in the postseason.
