Pochettino Opens Up About Tottenham's Challenges as Thomas Frank's Job Hangs in the Balancen

Pochettino Hints at Possible Return to Tottenham

Mauricio Pochettino, the former manager of Tottenham, has sparked rumors about a possible return to the North London club, stating that they “need to be” competing for both the Premier League and the Champions League.

These remarks come at a challenging time for current head coach Thomas Frank, whose position is believed to be precarious after a series of disappointing outcomes.

Pochettino Emphasizes Spurs’ Need for Major Success

Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Pochettino, now at the helm of the United States national team, expressed concerns about Tottenham’s current path.

Although Spurs celebrated ending a 17-year trophy drought with a Europa League victory last season under Ange Postecoglou, Pochettino argues that this achievement falls short of what is expected from a club of Tottenham’s caliber.

“It is true that Tottenham must aim to win the Premier League and the Champions League. Their facilities are at a Champions League level; in the past, that wasn’t the case,” he noted.

“The supporters valued our efforts because we competed for the Premier League and the Champions League. Winning a Europa League is a positive accomplishment, but it is not sufficient for a club of Tottenham’s stature.”

“Challenging for only the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, or Europa League isn’t enough. This club should be in the Champions League race, believing it can win, and also fighting for the Premier League title.”

Thomas Frank’s Position Under Threat

Pochettino’s comments come at a difficult time for Thomas Frank, as Tottenham currently finds itself in 15th place in the Premier League, just six points above the relegation zone.

Following a 2-0 loss to Manchester United, the team has now gone seven league matches without a victory. Frank has acknowledged their urgent need for a win before facing Newcastle United on Tuesday.

Reports indicate that his job could be at risk, with the club’s leadership becoming increasingly impatient as the domestic season deteriorates. Pochettino has emerged as a potential candidate to take over if Frank is dismissed.

Despite leading Spurs to the Champions League Round of 16, Frank’s league performance, with only seven wins in 25 matches, has jeopardized his position.

Pochettino’s Legacy and Future Prospects

The Argentine coach remains a well-regarded figure at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, credited with transforming the club during his five-year tenure from 2014 to 2019. Under his leadership, Spurs became consistent title contenders and recorded their best-ever points total in the 2016/17 season.

His time at the club culminated in a remarkable run to the 2019 Champions League Final, where they were ultimately defeated by Liverpool. The narrative of unfinished business has lingered since his departure five months later.

With Pochettino’s contract with the United States national team set to end after the 2026 World Cup, many fans are beginning to envisage a potential return that could restore the club to its former glory.
