Carlos Alcaraz and Andrey Rublev will be facing each other in the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday. The only previous encounter between them was at the Nitto ATP Finals last fall, where Alcaraz emerged victorious with a score of 7-5, 6-2.

This quarterfinal matchup at the Masters 1000 event may not come as a surprise, but both players have reasons to be pleased about reaching this stage.

Rublev, in particular, needed a positive result. Coming into the tournament on a four-match losing streak, the Russian had struggled since his early exit from the Dubai ATP 500 in March. However, with wins over Bagnis, Fokina, and Griekspoor, all in straight sets, Rublev has found his form in Madrid.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, has been dealing with health issues but has managed to impress with straight-set wins in Madrid. Despite a tough match against Struff, which he won in a deciding tiebreak, Alcaraz has shown resilience and determination.

Both players seem to be in good form heading into this quarterfinal clash. While Alcaraz has the advantage of being the defending champion, Rublev’s success on clay and aggressive style of play make him a formidable opponent. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Rublev continue his winning streak in Madrid.

Prediction: Rublev in 3
