Purcell and Thompson make successful comeback after Wimbledon defeat in New York

They missed out on the Wimbledon doubles title but Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson made up for that disappointment by claiming the US Open crown when they beat Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 6-4 7-6(4) for the US Open doubles crown.

It got a little bit tense with match points at the end. We stuck with it and we got there Jordan Thompson

The Australia pair failed to convert three match points in their Wimbledon final came close to repeating that feat against the Germans at Flushing Meadows when they held two championship points in the second set tiebreak but they recovered to close it ot after 06-minutes.

They become the first Aussie duo to win the doubles crown since the ‘Woodies’, Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 1996.

Earlier this year, they won titles in Dallas, Los Cabos and Houston and impressed at Flushing Meadows, where they dropped just one set en route to the title.

“Being a Grand Slam champion has a great ring to it,” Thompson said. “Especially after the heartbreak Wimbledon. It got a little bit tense with match points at the end. We stuck with it and we got there.”

Purcell and Thompson, who also saved two match points in their second-round win, have climbed five spots to third in the Doubles Rankings following their victory and in their first full season together, are hoping to qualify for the season ending ATP Finals.

Purcell, 26, has now two major doubles titles to his credit having also triumphed at Wimbledon in 2022 with compatriot Matthew Ebden, while Thompson, 30, was appearing in just his second doubles final at grand slam level.
