Medvedev Ends Borges Run

medvedev ao 1r 2024

Daniil Medvedev is through to his third Australian Open quarter-final in four years after beating Nuno Borges 6-3, 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-1.

In terms of matches, it wasn’t one for the ages, but it had some exciting moments with Medvedev in his defensive mode, which allowed Borges to dictate from the baseline.

That meant the Russain did a lot of running, but by making one more ball, he could extract several unforced errors from Borges.

By the match’s end, sixty-six had flowed from the Portugueses racket, with his best part of the match being when Medvedev blew a 5-2 lead in the third set and missed two match points at 5-4.

Borges, who used the Alcaraz drop shot blueprint throughout, went on to win that set 7-5, but the 3rd seed regrouped quickly in the fourth, dropping just one game en route to the last eight.

Actually, before this match, I was feeling 100%, but he made me run. I was pretty dead, to be honest, but by missing too much, I was able to recover for the fourth set, so I was able to raise my energy level. Could I have done it in the third? I don’t know. So now, I’m again pretty tired, but one day off and I should be fine. Medvedev on his energy levels during the tournament so far.

Hurkacz Halts Cazaux

hurkacz

Big-serving Hubert Hurkacz ended the dream run of French wildcard Arthur Cazaux 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3), 6-4 to make his maiden Australian Open quarter-final.

Heading into the match, it was Cazaux who’d been the serving sensation so far in Melbourne, and the 21-year-old started strong, quickly taking a 3-0 lead in the first set.

However, the ninth seed made a speedy comeback, breaking back and winning the tiebreak to force a lead.

The second set was a serve-dominated affair with no breaks, but Hurkacz managed to take another tiebreak, and then early in the third set, he broke Cazaux early and maintained that lead.

Hurkacz won 91 per cent of his first-serve points and conceded only one break in the match. When he finds the rhythm on serve, he’s tough to break, and it will be interesting to see how Medvedev returns’ his serve from way back when they meet.

Arthur is such a great competitor; congratulations to him for an amazing run here. I served well and he was serving well as well so I needed to stay aggressive and I’m really happy with today’s performance. I haven’t been into too many Grand Slam quarter-finals, and super excited. Hurkacz on his maidan AO quarter final appearance.

Zverev Negates Norrie

zverev ao 2024

Sascha Zverev kept his strong start to 2024 well and truly alive after defeating Cam Norrie 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(10-3).

It was a match with several twists and turns, mainly thanks to Norrie deploying his more aggressive tennis and net forays to disrupt the German.

While it worked in many areas, Zverev’s solidity from the baseline and his ability to lockdown in the final set tiebreak proved the difference as he extended his H2H lead vs the Brit to 5-0.

At the end of the day, this is a Grand Slam. Everybody is playing their best here. Cam was definitely playing amazing tennis and I’m just happy to be through. Zverev on his tight match vs Norrie.

Alcaraz Crushes Kecmanovic

alcaraz ao

In the most one-sided of the day’s fourth-round matches, Carlos Alcaraz raced past Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 in one hour and forty-nine minutes.

The Spaniard was much too good for the world number sixty, who entered the tie having played back-to-back fiver setters against Jan-Lennard Struff and Tommy Paul.

While he competed hard in the first two sets, limiting Alcaraz to one break in each, the third was a write-off as Alcaraz ramped up his game from the baseline, limiting the Serb to just 12 points in the set.

I think everything worked tonight. In Miami in 2022, it was a really close match, a high level from both of us. I think today was a pretty good match as well, but I pushed him to the limit with every ball at every point. Obviously, he has played a lot of matches in five sets, a lot of tough matches before this one, so probably physically, he wasn’t at 100 per cent. Every ball, I pushed him to the limit, moved him side to side. I took my chances in every set, and I think it was a pretty good match from myself. Alcaraz on his win over Kecmanovic
