Raducanu advances to round 2 at Wimbledon alongside Miyazaki and Kartal

Wimbledon | Raducanu leads Miyazaki and Kartal into round 2

Three of the 4 British women competing in the main draw at Wimbledon on Monday advanced to round 2 of The Championships, with Emma Raducanu, Lily Miyazaki and Sonay Kartal scoring impressive wins, while Heather Watson was edged out by her doubles partner, Greet Minnen.

Raducanu adjusted to a change of opponent, and kept a lid on her nerves on Centre Court, with a 7-6(0) 6-3 win over Mexico’s lucky loser, Renata Zarazua, after 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova withdrew just hours before due to illness.

Ranked inside the Top 10 in 2022, Raducanu entered Wimbledon at No 135, and already rises 19 places to 116 in the live listings.

Out on Court 16, Lily Miyazaki raced through her 1st-round match, taking just 58 minutes to dispatch Tamara Korpatsch from Germany, 6-2 6-1.

22-year-old Sonay Kartal, the British 9, who has been held back by injuries and health concerns, came through 3 rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw, and won 10 games in a row to upset 29th seed Sorana Cirstea from Romania, 3-6 6-2 6-0.
