Ranking the top twelve potential candidates for the Manchester United managerial position: Latest news and transfer updates

Manchester United lining up Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager should Erik ten Hag be sacked - Man United News And Transfer News

If reports are to be believed, there are now 12 names on the shortlist to become the next Manchester United manager, even though Erik ten Hag has not been sacked. Here, we attempt to rank the 12 men in terms of likelihood that they will be the next permanent manager of the Old Trafford outfit, should the Dutchman be given his marching orders in the near future.

12. Gareth Southgate

The former England head coach is said to be a friend of Ineos man Sir Dave Brailsford and United’s director of football, Dan Ashworth. However, David Ornstein has mentioned that he has not been considered for the role. Southgate himself has stated that he wants a complete break from football. His defensive style of play, lack of club management experience, and unpopularity with fans make it highly unlikely that he will be the next manager of Manchester United.

11. Massimiliano Allegri

Allegri has a proven track record at the top level of football with six scudettos and two Champions League finals. His defensive style of play, age of 57, and previous salary demands may work against him. Ineos’s lack of serious consideration for him in the summer indicates that they may have already ruled him out.

10. Simone Inzaghi

Despite recent reports suggesting contact with United, Inzaghi distanced himself from the rumors quickly and pledged his future to Inter. His success at Inter and positive style of football make him a potential candidate, but the financial implications of his appointment could be a deterrent for United at this time.

9. Xabi Alonso

Alonso’s success at Bayer Leverkusen has garnered attention, but his ties to Liverpool and reluctance to leave Leverkusen mid-season may pose challenges. United might need to wait until the end of the season to secure his services.

8. Thomas Tuchel

Tuchel, with a proven track record including a Champions League win with Chelsea, is considered a hot favorite for the United job. However, talks between Tuchel and Ineos collapsed due to control over transfers and salary demands. His style of play may also not align with United’s preferences, and recent links to the England job suggest a move away from managing United.

7. Michael Carrick

Carrick, an unbeaten caretaker manager at United, has been tipped as a potential candidate. However, his age and relative inexperience may hinder a permanent appointment at this stage.

6. Kieran McKenna

McKenna’s impressive track record at Ipswich makes him a candidate for the United job in the future. However, his recent results and experience level may suggest it’s too soon for him to take on the role.

5. Thomas Frank

Frank’s achievements at Brentford position him as a potential backup choice for United. His strong record in the Premier League could make him a safe pair of hands for the club.

4. Graham Potter

Potter’s availability and past success at Swansea and Brighton make him a strong candidate for United. His potential interim appointment could give him a chance to prove his worth to the club.
