Authorities in Spain are proposing a fine of €4,000 ($4,625) for a fan of Real Oviedo following allegations of racist remarks directed at Marcus Rashford, a forward for Barcelona.

The anti-violence commission stated on Thursday that during the match on September 25, where Barcelona claimed a 3-1 victory, a fan was recorded using a racial slur in Spanish aimed at Rashford.

“La Liga identified the incident through social media footage and subsequently reported it to the National Police,” the commission’s statement indicated.

Furthermore, analysis from the surveillance footage at the stadium facilitated the identification of the individual involved. The final handling of this proposal will depend on the outcomes of the ongoing criminal investigation.

Officials have not yet disclosed a timeline for the final decision on the matter.

Currently, Rashford, aged 27, is on loan at Barcelona for the season from Manchester United.

The England international has been subjected to racial abuse multiple times throughout his career.

In a notable incident in 2021, a man was imprisoned in England for racially abusing Rashford on social media after the player missed a penalty kick during England’s Euro 2020 final loss.
