Rashford's Flu Woes Cast Doubt on Camp Nou Comeback Against Barcelonan

Rashford’s Flu Raises Concerns for Barcelona’s Match at Camp Nou

Barcelona’s forward Marcus Rashford may not be available for the team’s upcoming match against Athletic Club at the Spotify Camp Nou due to flu. He missed training sessions on Thursday and Friday, casting doubt on his participation this weekend.

Coach Hansi Flick confirmed the situation during a press conference, indicating that a decision on Rashford’s availability will be made closer to kickoff. “Marcus is experiencing fever, hence his absence from training yesterday and today. We’re uncertain if he will be ready by tomorrow,” Flick stated.

Rashford has made a significant impact since his loan move from Manchester United, contributing six goals and eight assists while starting in the last ten matches. His presence has been particularly vital with Raphinha sidelined. However, Flick is optimistic about Raphinha’s return after a two-month injury layoff; he will likely feature against Athletic, although not from the start.

“The good news is that Raphinha is back in training,” Flick declared. “His availability gives us additional options, and it’s a positive step for him to be on the bench.” Additionally, Lamine Yamal is recovering well from a groin issue, and Flick believes it was wise for Yamal to miss international games while Spain secured a spot for the upcoming World Cup.

Goalkeeper Joan García is fit to return for the matchup, but Frenkie de Jong will miss the encounter due to suspension, while Pedri is still not ready to play, although he may return for a future match against Chelsea in the Champions League.

Saturday’s match will mark Barcelona’s first game at Camp Nou since their temporary relocation to the Olympic Stadium for renovations. The capacity will be limited to 45,000 fans as final touches continue, with full completion expected by 2027. Flick expressed excitement about returning to their historic home ground, noting the electrifying atmosphere and the support from the fans can drive the team forward in their quest for victory.

“It’s great to be back at Camp Nou. The open training session two weeks ago reminded me of the excitement and energy from the fans,” Flick commented. “It’s a true football stadium that fuels our passion for the game.”

He also addressed rumors surrounding Lionel Messi‘s recent visit to the Camp Nou, suggesting that a future return of the star player isn’t out of the question, although he acknowledged Messi’s contract situation prevents it from happening soon.

Barcelona has the opportunity to climb to the top of LaLiga with a win over Athletic, as they look to capitalize before league leaders Real Madrid face Elche on Sunday.
