Rebecca Marino brings BJK Cup trophy to British Columbia, boosting momentum for Pacific Tennis Centre project.

Momentum grows for Pacific Tennis Centre project as Rebecca Marino hosts BJK Cup trophy in home province of British Columbia

Since April 19, the Billie Jean King Cup trophy has been traveling throughout Canada, making its way to British Columbia. Accompanied by Vancouverite Rebecca Marino, part of the winning team of Canada’s first-ever world championship, the trophy visited various events and locations in her hometown.

Events kicked off with the proclamation of Billie Jean King Cup World Champions Day by Mayor Ken Sim, followed by a panel discussion at Jericho Tennis Club with Marino, Tennis Canada CEO Gavin Ziv, Coach Roberto Brogin, and athlete Eliana Kook. A Girls. Set. Match. event was also held at the Tennis BC HUB, engaging local young women and girls players.

On May 11, the trophy visited Burnaby, the future location of the Pacific Tennis Centre (PTC) project. The event featured Marino, Mayor Mike Hurley, Denise Wong, Michael Downey, and Lawrence Kumar.

Marino expressed pride in bringing the trophy back as a world champion, while Kumar emphasized the importance of supporting women’s tennis in the community.

The Pacific Tennis Centre – for the community and Western Canada’s next tennis superstars

The event in Burnaby focused on the PTC facility, highlighting its importance in promoting inclusivity and accessibility in tennis. The facility aims to benefit both high-performance athletes and recreational players.

The PTC project awaits additional funding before proceeding, with the aim of developing promising tennis stars in the region. Marino and Wong both highlighted the value the facility would bring to the local and provincial tennis community.
