Recap of Americans Overseas: Cowell, Zendejas, and other standout performers

Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Cowell, Zendejas, and more

Chivas de Guadalajara suffered defeat for the first time in this new Liga MX season, but Cade Cowell left Friday’s match as one of the top performers overall.

Cowell scored his first goal and registered his first assist of the Apertura season in Chivas’ 4-2 road loss to Club Tijuana. The former San Jose Earthquakes homegrown logged an impressive 90 minutes, making an impact in the final third on two occasions.

Cowell cut Chivas’ deficit to 2-1 in the 69th minute, finishing off Erick Gutierrez’s pass into the back of the net. It marked his fifth goal for Chivas in his 24th overall appearance.

However, Xolos would pull away in the final stage of the match before Cowell’s stoppage time assist served as a consolation. He won three duels, drew one foul, and made five defensive recoveries, to go along with his first goal and assist of the new campaign.

Chivas visits Queretaro on Tuesday, still seeking its first win this summer.

Elsewhere in Mexico, Alex Zendejas assisted once in Club America’s victory. Brandon Vazquez and Frankie Amaya both came off the bench in their respective matches.
