Alcaraz Battles Past Humbert
Carlos Alcaraz faced another battle at Wimbledon on Sunday but overcame Ugo Humbert 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to secure his ninth Grand Slam quarter-final appearance. Early in the tournament, I noticed that Humbert was finding some form after some disappointing losses on grass, and he gave Alcaraz plenty to think about with his grass-suited game. The Frenchman was the stronger player for large parts of the match, using his powerful lefty forehand to dictate, but the Spaniard came up with the goods when it mattered. Alcaraz was able to forge a two-set lead, but after dropping the third set 1-6, he was forced to save three break points at 3-4 in the fourth set to avert another potential five-setter.
“Playing a lefty is always tricky. I played a lefty at Queen’s and learned a bit from that match. I felt great playing today. I played at a really high level. I just tried to fight for every ball. It doesn’t matter which part of the court I am in; just give myself a chance to stay alive at the point. On set point, that was a really important point for me. It didn’t matter what he was going to do, I am going to be there, fighting until the last ball.” – Alcaraz on his win over Humbert.
Sinner Sinks Shelton
Jannik Sinner has improved round by round, and he made relatively light work of Ben Shelton with a 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(9) win to secure his spot in the quarter-finals for the third consecutive year. Shelton, who had three played five-setters in a row to make the fourth round, couldn’t assert his powerful game as the Italian neutralised his serve, breaking him four times. Shelton broke serve in the third, and despite not maintaining his lead, he then had three set points in the third-set tie-break, but overall, he appeared fatigued.
Other Matches of Note
Dimitrov Retires vs Medvedev: Daniil Medvedev is through to the last eight after Grigor Dimitrov retired with a knee injury while trailing 3-5 in the first set. Dimitrov, who slipped at 2-3, attempted to continue after a medical timeout but stopped after 35 minutes.
Paul Beats Bautista Agut: A comfortable 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-2 win for the American who is looking to be a real force on the grass, having won Queen’s before Wimbledon, and he is capable of pushing Alcaraz to the limit.
