Recap of Quarterfinal Matches at the French Open on Day 11

French Open 2024 Day 6 Recap

Day eleven at Roland Garros only featured one men’s quarter-final as Alexander Zverev defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets to set up a semi-final with Casper Ruud.

Novak Djokovic, who has a meniscus tear, was forced to withdraw from his last-eight match against Ruud, giving the Norwegian a walkover into Friday’s semi-final.

The Serb underwent surgery in Paris on Wednesday morning and is unlikely to play Wimbledon.

You can see highlights, match stats and a recap below.

Zverev Too Strong for de Minaur

zverev

Alexander Zverev is into the Roland Garros semi-finals for the fourth straight year after defeating 11th seed Alex de Minaur 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-4.

Playing under the lights on Court Philippe-Chatrier, the Australian pushed Zverev, but he managed to stay solid enough when under pressure to progress in straight sets.

The German started strongly, going up an early break in the first set, but de Minaur hit back, only to see the set snatched from him.

In the second set tiebreak, Zverev started terribly, slipping down 0-4 with some tame forehand errors, but from 3/5, he won four straight points to take a two-set lead.

During the third set, Zverev played more aggressively and overcame a late setback, breaking De Minaur after failing to serve the match at 5-3, clinching victory after two hours and 59 minutes.

In terms of spectacle, this match was a bit of a non-event, as I don’t think either man played well. The wind was swirling at one end of the court, so it wasn’t easy to hold serve from there, and Zverev wasn’t at his best on the forehand side as he didn’t go after the ball.

De Minaur was tenacious as usual and tracked down a lot of balls, but other than being a nuisance, he lacks the cutting edge to trouble the top guys in over five sets.
