Reigning NWSL champions NJ/NY Gotham sign Rose Lavelle, Emily Sonnett

Reigning NWSL champions NJ/NY Gotham sign Rose Lavelle, Emily Sonnett

Reigning NWSL champions NJ/NY Gotham bolstered their roster heavily ahead of a title defense in 2024.

U.S. women’s national team veterans Rose Lavelle and Emily Sonnett have signed with the Eastern Conference club through 2026, NJ/NY Gotham announced Thursday. Both Lavelle and Sonnett were recently part of the OL Reign squad that lost 2-1 to Gotham in the 2023 NWSL Final.

The news comes just days after NJ/NY Gotham added fellow USWNT players Crystal Dunn and Tierna Davidson to their roster.

We are incredibly excited to have two exceptional talents like Rose and Emily join the club,” said Gotham FC general manager and head of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West.

“Rose is a crafty and entertaining player, and our fans and club will be very excited to watch her at Red Bull Arena, and Sonnett is a true professional and competitor, who understands what success in the league looks like. The club and our fans are extremely excited to have players of their stature as we build upon the success of last season.”

The 28-year-old Lavelle spent three seasons with OL Reign in Seattle, winning the NWSL Shield in 2022. A former No. 1 pick in the 2017 NWSL Draft by the Boston Breakers, Lavelle also played for Washington Spirit in the NWSL, as well as WSL side Manchester City.

Since debuting for the USWNT in 2017, Lavelle has scored 24 goals and added 21 assists in 92 appearances.

Sonnett, 30, was also a No. 1 overall pick in the NWSL after being selected by the Portland Thorns in 2016. She has lifted two NWSL titles during her club career, as well as one NWSL Shield.

Sonnett has earned 83 caps for the USWNT to date since debuting in 2015.

Both Sonnett and Lavelle were part of the 2023 USWNT squad that suffered a Round of 16 exit at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
