In a shocking development, Zach Lowe, a 12-year ESPN veteran, has been let go by the network shortly after NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski announced his retirement.
The Athletic was the first to report the news:
“ESPN has decided to part ways with NBA senior writer Zach Lowe as part of their ongoing layoffs,” according to sources familiar with the decision, as reported by The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand.
“….Lowe’s significant salary, which exceeded seven figures annually, was a major factor in ESPN’s decision, as per sources familiar with the terms of his contract. He is expected to be the final layoff in this round.”
Recently, ESPN also let go of NFL reporters Robert Griffin III and Samantha Ponder just before the start of the NFL season last month. This move is part of ESPN’s fiscal year planning that concludes at the end of September.
In addition to his writing duties at ESPN, Lowe frequently appeared on the network’s daily program NBA Today to offer analysis and insight, and hosted the podcast The Lowe Post.
The podcast served as a valuable source of NBA news, and just this week, Lowe had incoming Lakers coach JJ Redick as a guest on the show.
Lowe had been with ESPN for more than a decade and was one of the few writers who transitioned to ESPN after Bill Simmons’ Grantland ceased operations in 2015.
Many in the NBA community are now speculating that Lowe may join Bill Simmons’ current venture, The Ringer.
Alternatively, networks like NBC and Amazon are likely in need of NBA talent for their league rights agreements starting in 2025.
He may even reunite with his former colleague Wojnarowski to assist the men’s basketball team at St. Bonaventure.
The possibilities are endless for Lowe’s next move.
