Retief Goosen Takes the Lead at the 2024 Dominion Energy Charity Classic

Retief Goosen leads 2024 Dominion Energy Charity Classic

The 2024 Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs kicked off at The Country Club of Virginia during this week’s Dominion Energy Charity Classic.

Retief Goosen set the pace with a 6-under 66 on Thursday, leading five others by a shot at the 54-hole event. Goosen, a previous winner of the Galleri Classic in Rancho Mirage, California earlier in the season, is aiming for his fourth PGA Tour Champions victory. Among those who shot a 5-under 67 on Friday was Paul Goydos, who impressively hit all 18 greens in regulation.

Only the top 72 golfers from the regular season are competing in the tournament. The highlight this week is that only the top 54 players after Sunday’s final round will move on to the second event of the postseason, the Simmons Bank Championship in Little Rock, Arkansas.

After the first 18 holes in Virginia, three golfers have moved up into the top 54, while three others have fallen out.

Players moving up include:

  • Paul Goydos, climbing from 59th to 38th
  • Heath Slocum, moving from 62nd to 40th
  • David Bransdon, rising from 56th to 53rd

Players moving down are:

  • Chris DiMarco, dropping from 51st to 56th
  • Angel Cabrera, going from 54th to 57th
  • Kirk Triplett, falling from 53rd to 58th

Cabrera had the last spot in the top 54 and is now replaced by Kenny Perry in that position with 36 holes still to be played this weekend.
