Retired Athlete Advises Justin Fields Against Attempting Kickoff Returns

Former Player Warns Justin Fields About Trying Kickoff Returns

Justin Fields was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers by the Chicago Bears this offseason.

The former first-round pick had a tough three years in Chicago, but it wasn’t all his fault considering the team he was playing for.

Now, he gets a fresh start as a backup quarterback playing behind Russell Wilson in the Steel City.

There have also been reports of Fields, with his running abilities, being tried out at kick returner.

Former NFL receiver Greg Jennings appeared on The Carton Show recently to analyze this possible idea.

“If you are Justin Fields, you can’t fall into this. If you are going to be a quarterback, you better remain a quarterback…Now you’ve devalued yourself,” Jennings said.

Jennings may have a point.

If Fields becomes more of a gadget type of player that can be used in multiple areas, that might hurt his career.

He came into the NFL as a first-round quarterback out of Ohio State after taking the Buckeyes to the College Football Playoff.

There is no question that he has plenty of talent.

What he needs to do is take the year to study a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Wilson.

If head coach Mike Tomlin wants to use him on running plays, that sounds like a great move considering his rushing skills (1,143 rushing yards in 2021).

However, if he wants to be the next Taysom Hill or an actual kick returner, that will cost him in the future in terms of health and money.

It’s great if he wants to do whatever it takes to win, but for himself, he should stay at quarterback.
