The Milwaukee Brewers, leaders of the NL Central division, faced the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on Monday.
It was a duel of heavyweights, and the home club ended up notching the 3-1 victory.
In the top of the seventh inning, with the score 3-0 in favor of the Phils, former Phillies star Rhys Hoskins got a fastball high in the zone and sent it to the stands for a home run.
That would put the finishing touches to the score.
Hoskins, as you probably remember, became famous in Philadelphia.
He made his MLB debut in 2017 with 18 homers in a span of 50 games.
Then, he became an established veteran with the power to hit 30+ homers per season and some impressive plate discipline.
His defensive shortcomings and issues to keep his average up at decent levels left him without a spot in Philly’s future plan, not to mention the fact Bryce Harper now plays his position: first base.
The Brewers gave him a short-term contract and he is showing the knee injury he suffered ahead of the 2023 campaign is behind him.
Now, he is slashing a solid .243/.345/.486 with 10 home runs and a .831 OPS or, in other words, a typical Hoskins line.
His potent right-handed bat has been one of the reasons the Brewers have been so solid this year.
He had his homecoming on Monday, and while Phillies fans certainly didn’t want to see him go yard against their team, he contributed a lot to the recent playoff runs and is loved and respected in Philly.
