Andy Roddick was fascinated by the 2024 Wimbledon Championships final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic and left amazed by the Spaniard.
Roddick spent the entirety of his career battling the Big Three, so he’s quite an expert when it comes to legendary players. He’s played against them many times, and he’s already entirely on board with Alcaraz being a legendary player.
The Spaniard has plenty of achievements to his name, and you’d need a few minutes listing them out. His win over Djokovic a few days ago earned him his fourth Grand Slam trophy, and he’s still only 21.
Roddick couldn’t help but praise the 21-year-old for his achievements during the most recent episode of his podcast, ‘Served with Andy Roddick,’ calling the Spaniard ‘something special.’
“We’re watching something special and how lucky are we that in the vacuum of the Big 3, that not only we have this great player who is box office and [Jannik] Sinner, they kind of operate in a different way.”
“But he’s insanely fun to watch and he emotes and he’s happy, and he’s respectful and he’s a steward of the game.”
Alcaraz is just fascinating. He’s amazing in many ways, which completes this picture of a superstar that tennis hasn’t seen in a while.
“Carlos is a legend already. Now he’s squarely in sight of [Stefan] Edberg, icons of our game. Six slams [Boris] Becker right there, [Jimmy] Connors, [Andre] Agassi eight. You’re not going to find a lot of people betting against him, passing those massive names, we got another one.”
For Roddick, it’s just incredible, especially his consistency when it comes to being really nice to everyone around. There is no shortage of admiration, and that comes from a former world number one who was a fantastic player at his peak.
“It seems like he doesn’t really have bad days with the media or opponents or I don’t remember him getting chippy with an opponent.”
“I can’t say that I was the worst and I had to do it because I felt like I had to do that to try to win. He doesn’t need to do that stuff, he’s like almost above it and it’s just impressive.”
