According to transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal is currently in advanced negotiations with Italy and Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori. Calafiori’s impressive performances in the 2024 European Championship (EURO 2024) have expedited the process, despite Arsenal’s interest predating the tournament.
Arsenal’s Pursuit of Summer Transfer Targets
Arsenal, having narrowly missed out on the Premier League title in the 2023-24 season, are gearing up for another title push in 2024-25. Recognizing the need for squad improvements to compete with Manchester City, the North London side is targeting key positions in the upcoming summer transfer window. Reports indicate their desire to strengthen both the center-forward and defensive positions.
While the center-forward target remains unidentified, Arsenal have set their sights on Calafiori to reinforce their defense. The 22-year-old is capable of playing as a center-back or left-back, providing valuable versatility to the Arsenal squad. With his potential to succeed Zinchenko and Kiwior, as well as to provide cover for Saliba and Magalhaes, Calafiori could be a key addition to the team.
Fabrizio Romano’s Update on Arsenal’s Negotiations with Calafiori
Despite ongoing discussions between Arsenal and Bologna regarding Calafiori’s transfer, the deal has yet to be finalized. Speculation around the deal has raised doubts, especially concerning Calafiori’s injury history.
In his Daily Briefing column for CaughtOffside, Romano confirmed that Calafiori has agreed to a five-year contract with Arsenal, signaling progress in the negotiations. Romano stated:
“Negotiations are continuing between Arsenal and Bologna for Riccardo Calafiori. The player has agreed to a five-year contract with Arsenal, however, the clubs are still discussing the transfer fee, deal structure, add-ons, and other details. The outcome of the negotiations remains to be seen, with Calafiori expressing his desire to join Arsenal.”
Calafiori, who registered an assist in three EURO 2024 matches for Italy, has made 33 appearances for Bologna since his arrival last summer, contributing two goals and five assists. His current contract with Bologna is set to expire in June 2027.
