Cristiano Ronaldo remains determined to continue his football career, asserting he still possesses both the drive and ability to compete alongside younger talent. The striker for Al Nassr, who leads men’s international football with 141 goals in 223 matches for Portugal, expressed his hunger for more achievements, even as family members urge him to slow down.
This season, the 40-year-old has already netted five goals in six matches across all competitions for Al Nassr. He recently made history by becoming the joint-top goalscorer in World Cup qualifying, achieving his 39th goal in a match against Hungary.
“People, especially my family, often suggest it’s time for me to retire. They’ve said I’ve accomplished everything, so why strive for a thousand goals?” Ronaldo remarked in an interview with Canal 11. “However, I don’t share that sentiment. I still feel capable of contributing significantly to both my club and my national team, so why not keep pushing forward?”
“I believe that when my career ends, I’ll have no regrets, as I’ve poured my heart into football. While I know my playing years are limited, I intend to savor every moment of the few left.”
Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or recipient, recently earned the Prestige award at the Portugal Football Globes, marking yet another highlight in his illustrious career.
“This isn’t a retirement award,” he clarified. “I view it as a recognition of my long-standing dedication and effort. Winning excites me, and I enjoy mentoring younger players, who also motivate me to maintain my competitiveness. I still have a genuine passion for this sport.”
Having signed a new contract with Al Nassr, Ronaldo is set to remain in the Saudi Pro League until June 2027. He played a pivotal role in leading Portugal to victory in the UEFA Nations League this past June.
Throughout his career, Ronaldo has amassed over 940 goals. Reflecting on his dedication to his national team, he stated, “I often tell you that I wish I could exclusively represent my country, as that is the pinnacle of a footballer’s journey. It is a privilege to play for the national team.” The 2026 World Cup presents his final chance to capture the one major trophy that has eluded him.
Portugal will face the Republic of Ireland in an upcoming World Cup qualifier on Saturday, followed by a match against Hungary on October 14. Ronaldo expressed confidence, stating, “I believe our upcoming games will yield success and lead us to qualification for the World Cup. Our ultimate goal is to win the tournament, but we must approach this challenge step by step.”
