Rory McIlroy expresses shock over Europeans’ reaction to Ryder Cup news

Rory McIlroy says Europeans were in ‘disbelief’ with Ryder Cup news

After a three-week break following his disappointing loss at the U.S. Open, many were curious to see how Rory McIlroy would perform at the Genesis Scottish Open. On Thursday morning, those questions were answered as the defending champion shot an impressive 5-under 65 in the opening round, putting him in a tie for third place.

Starting on the 10th hole, McIlroy began his day with a birdie but gave it back on the 11th. He added more birdies on the 14th and 16th holes to finish the front nine at 1-under 34.

On the back nine, McIlroy continued his momentum by making a birdie on the 1st hole and then chipping in for an eagle on the 3rd hole. He added another birdie on the 4th hole and finished the day with five pars, narrowly missing a few birdie putts on the last few holes.

Speaking to the media after his round, McIlroy expressed confidence in his game and was pleased with his performance. He also commented on Keegan Bradley being named the United States Ryder Cup captain for 2025, acknowledging it as a surprise choice and highlighting the curiosity surrounding the decision.

The mood regarding Bradley’s appointment was described as one of disbelief among European teammates, adding an element of intrigue to the upcoming Ryder Cup.
