Jannik Sinner collected his 12th consecutive win to reach the quarter final of the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam but was taken to three sets by Gael Monfils before the Frenchman capitulated.
The Australian Open champion finished strongly to set up a clash with a revitalised Milos Raonic in the last eight of the indoor ATP 500 level event.
Playing his second match since winning the Australian Open last January, the 22-year-old Italian won 6-3 3-6 6-3 to secure his win after one-hour and 52-minutes of tricky play.
The world No. 4 finished with fewer winners than his opponent (13 v 21) and also made more unforced errors (15 v 14) but served well to snap Monfils’ 11-match winning streak at the tournament.
“It was one shaky game of mine in the second set and things changed so fast,” said Sinner in his post-match interview.
“I still believe that these kinds of matches, they help you a lot, especially on the mental part. When you don’t play your best tennis and you still try somehow to find the way to win.
“Against him, it is never easy, I have the feeling we know each other a little bit better now, and he changed some things, as I do, and today went my way.”
Earlier in the day, Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko secured the “best win” of his career as he took out the seventh seeded Dane, Holger Rune 6-4 1-6 6-3 and will face next, the sixth seeded Bulgarian, Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 6-3 7-5 for his 12th win of the season.
Home favourite Tallon Griekspoor upset the fourth seed from Poland, Hubert Hurkacz 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 7-6(4) in a big serving contest which saw the Dutchman blast down 23 aces to the Pole’s 28 in the two-hour, 34-minute contest.
