Andrey Rublev is a player who traditionally plays a lot of tournaments every year, but this year might be a bit different, according to his coach.
For a few years now, Andrey Rublev has been part of the tennis elite. Every year proved to be a minor step forward as he works hard every week and plays a lot. For years now, Rublev has been one of the top players with most events played, and that’s just his nature.
He loves to play the sport and often pushes more than he should have. Earlier this year, Rublev won Monte-Carlo and immediately went to Banja Luka to play the event there even though his coach urged him not to play. He spoke about that in a recent interview with Tennis Majors.
Of course if you compare with Novak and these guys. Maybe this year, in 2024, we should (skip) some tournaments. But sometimes you make a deal with one tournament. After Monte-Carlo, he won Monte Carlo. I said: ‘Better to not play.’ He said: ‘No, they’re going to start on Wednesday and they make an effort, they trust in me, that’s why they signed me to go.’
And he went to Banja Luka and he made finals. He’s not a guy who will tank. Sometimes he plays doubles. He wants to go full.
Over time, though, Rublev will change his approach out of necessity. Playing a lot of events might seem fun as you’re young, but the older you get, the more it starts to matter. Nowadays, even young players are starting to plan out their schedules carefully, and Rublev will surely follow suit.
We’ll see how he handles this year’s schedule. In 2023, only two players in the Top 10 played more events than Rublev and only four in the top 20 played more than him. He’s already played an event, and the new season hasn’t even started yet.
