Rune Sets Up Rublev Showdown In Final Four Of UTS Grand Final After Beating Monfils

Rune Sets Up Rublev Showdown In Final Four Of UTS Grand Final After Beating Monfils

Holger Rune bested Gael Monfils in four quarters to reach the Final Four of the 2023 Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) Grand Final.

Earlier on Saturday, Holger “The Viking” Rune bested Alexander “The Bublik Enemy” Bublik to keep his Final Four hopes alive, while Gael “La Monf” Monfils was forced to retire against Jack “The Power” Draper.

That meant that their match would decide the last player to join the Final Four line-up. The Frenchman had to undergo a treatment to be ready for the match, but he got ready in time, and was ready to deliver a show in front of his good friends from French national football team, Hugo Lloris and Alphonse Areola, who were in the attendance.

But in the first quarter, Rune was the better player, and by quite a lot. The Dane won the opening quarter 17-9, and he was in a good mood during the interview between the quarters.

Yet, in the second quarter, Monfils seemed to have the upper hand, but the Frenchman made a big mistake when he didn’t use his “next point counts x3” card in time, and at 14-11, he had “only” three quarter points.

However, Monfils wasn’t able to use any of the three quarter points, and after that, a deciding point decided the second quarter, and the Danish player showed his nerves of steel, winning the quarter 15-14.

But Monfils stepped up his level once more in the third quarter, and this time there was no comeback for the Dane as his opponent won it dominantly 19-9.

After that, Rune took over the control of the match once again, and this time, he was able to close it out, winning 17-9, 15-14, 9-19, and 16-13 to book his semifinal spot at the 2023 Ultimate Tennis Showdown Grand Final. In the semifinal match, he’ll take on Andrey “Rublo” Rublev, who is yet to lose a match.
