Holger Rune is not bothered by coach Boris Becker‘s past and admits his solitary job is to coach him and “not to do anything else.”
Becker, a former World No. 1 and winner of six Grand Slam singles titles in a highly successful 16-year playing career, is considered among the greatest tennis players of all time. But he is living with a tainted off-court reputation following a criminal conviction by the UK courts in 2022.
The German tennis great declared bankruptcy in the UK in 2017 but failed to disclose to creditors and the bankruptcy trustee details of hidden assets and loans under his name.
Consequently, he was sentenced to two and half years in prison after being convicted of four charges under the Insolvency Act. Becker went through a chilling experience in a British prison last year for a period of eight months before he was deported to his homeland in December.
Currently working in his first high-profile job since his early release from prison, Becker wants to shape Holger Rune into a top player. The Danish star was impressed by his autumn services and signed him up for an entire season in 2024.
Rune admits Becker has just one job with him: to coach, and is not looking to delve into his off-court saga. The 20-year-old is playing the UTS Grand Final in London this weekend without Becker in his corner, who is banned from setting foot in the UK until at least October 2024.
“I know many players that really like him. So do I. Whatever he’s doing off the court, I don’t need to have an opinion on that because I hired him to coach me, not to do anything else.”
“He’s a great guy. He’s a really good man. I think if people mistake him from that, it’s totally wrong, because he has a great heart and he’s a great coach.”
